Carnac (Karnag in Breton) is a commune in the Morbihan department of Brittany in northwestern France. It is renowned for its megalithic monuments, which date from the Neolithic period – more than 4,000 years ago. The site is a much-visited tourist attraction and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Carnac’s megaliths, predominantly standing-stones and alignments, are spread out over an area of three square kilometres; their sheer number and density is unparalleled. Some stones are as much as six metres tall and weigh up to seven tonnes. They are arranged in groups of circles, rectangles, avenues and horseshoes. The alignments of Carnac have been carefully studied, although little is known of the religious practices associated with them. In addition to its Neolithic features, Carnac is also home to a number of Bronze Age tumuli and remains of Iron, Medieval and Modern Age fortifications. Be sure to stroll along the network of paths traversing the site and stop at the Carnac Museum and Maison des Mégalithes to learn more about the area’s rich history.
