Füssen is a small Bavarian town at the northern edge of the Alps in the Ostallgäu district, perched where the Lech river threads through a narrow valley near the Forggensee and the border with Austria. Its compact, mostly pedestrian old town preserves medieval scale—cobblestone lanes, pastel-painted facades and the fortified High Castle (Hohes Schloss) and onion-domed St. Mang’s Abbey that dominate the skyline. Visually compelling are the tight compositional contrasts: Gothic and Baroque architecture close to dramatic alpine slopes, with the Lech and nearby lakes offering low-angle reflections and winter-to-autumn shifts in color and light. Füssen also has a long luthier tradition, historically linked to stringed-instrument making, which adds a tangible cultural layer to street scenes and museum displays.
