📍 From Herrengasse, Austria
The Fuggerei in Augsburg, Austria is the world's oldest social housing complex, dating from 1521. This unique complex consists of 67 homes set within walled gardens in the historic old city. It was founded to provide housing for needy citizens, financed by the Fugger family, one of the most wealthy families of the region during the Renaissance. The complex is still inhabited today, and tour guides offer a peek into these private dwellings to the public. It is a great place to learn about the culture and history of Augsburg, as well as to stroll around scenic courtyards and explore the typical Bavarian architecture. Visiting the Fuggerei is a truly enlightening experience, and a must-see for all those passing by Augsburg.
