Fugaku Wind Cave is a lava tube carved by Mount Fuji’s flows, located on the northern flank of Mount Fuji within the Aokigahara forest near Lake Kawaguchi in Fujikawaguchiko. Its cultural interest stems from local use: the cave’s persistent cool airflow and ice pockets were historically exploited for storing silkworm cocoons and harvested ice. Geologically it exposes columnar and blocky basalt textures, thin lava striations and uneven vaulted ceilings that reveal the cave’s volcanic origin. Visually the space is defined by low, horizontal passages, patches of reflected light at the entrances, and damp, glistening rock that contrasts with the dark interior; vertical shafts bring shafts of daylight that punctuate compositional lines and emphasize scale. Interior walkways and low headroom shape vantage points and require crouching or wide-framing to capture the cave’s textures and the interplay of natural light and shadow.
