Fuerte Real de San Felipe is the compact coastal fort that crowns the headland beside the colonial settlement of Cidade Velha on Santiago Island, Cape Verde. Built to command the mouth of the Ribeira Grande valley, its low, thick stone bastions and angled walls read as pragmatic military masonry shaped to resist cannon fire and seaborne attack. Visually it pairs weathered volcanic stone and stucco with broad, low parapets that frame the Atlantic and the town’s red-tiled roofs; from the ramparts you get layered compositions of sea, harbor, and the narrow streets below. Textures of lichen-streaked masonry and erosion patterns make close-up details as photogenic as the wide vistas, and the fort’s scale—compact but imposing—reveals how Cidade Velha once depended on this sentinel for coastal defense.
