Fuerte de Victoria Grande is an 18th-century stronghold in Melilla’s fourth fortified enclosure, positioned on high ground west of the older citadel of Melilla la Vieja. Its location reflects the expansion of the city’s defenses beyond the original coastal walls, securing the surrounding heights and approaches. Thick masonry ramparts, angular bastions and enclosed courtyards give the fort a compact, geometric character. From its elevated setting, photographs can contrast the warm-toned stonework with Melilla’s dense modern city, the port and the Mediterranean beyond, while the layered walls reveal how the fortress was shaped by the terrain.
