Fuente de los Candados is a small ornamental fountain on Avenida 18 de Julio at Yi, beside the historic Bar Facal in central Montevideo. Its railings are covered with padlocks left by couples, following a local tradition that links the locks with enduring love and a future return to the fountain. The accumulation of engraved names, initials, dates, ribbons, and weathered metal gives the site its distinctive texture. Framed by one of the capital’s busiest avenues, it offers an intimate human detail against the movement, storefronts, and urban architecture of downtown Montevideo.
