Fushimi Momoyama Castle stands on a wooded hill in southern Kyoto’s Fushimi district, above an area long associated with sake brewing and river transport. The original castle was built for Toyotomi Hideyoshi in the late 16th century and later became a key setting in the conflict preceding the Battle of Sekigahara; it was dismantled in the early Edo period. The present white-walled, dark-roofed keep is a modern concrete reconstruction from 1964 rather than a surviving historic structure. Its layered roofs, gold-toned details and pairing of a main keep with a smaller tower create the recognizable composition, especially when framed by the park’s trees and cherry blossoms. The castle interior is closed to visitors, but the surrounding grounds provide exterior views.
