Sao Chingcha, or the Giant Swing, is a towering red ceremonial frame in Bangkok’s historic Phra Nakhon district, directly outside Wat Suthat and near Bangkok City Hall. First erected during the reign of Rama I in 1784, it was associated with a royal Brahmin swing ceremony in which participants swung high above the ground to grasp a suspended prize; the dangerous practice ended in the 1930s. The monument’s spare, monumental form contrasts with Wat Suthat’s layered roofs and ornate gables, while its vermilion color stands out against the pale civic buildings and busy streets of the old city. Frontal views emphasize the symmetry of its two pillars and curved crossbeam, while wider compositions reveal the striking meeting of religious, royal, and modern urban Bangkok.
