The majestic Friedensengel monument in Munich, Germany makes for a stunning sight. At the site of the old gate of Munich, the statue stands atop a 70m arch which was constructed in memory of those who perished in the Franco-Prussian War. This 51m-tall monument was built in 1871 and has since become an iconic symbol of peace and gained protected status in 1923. The statue is surrounded by a reflecting pool and two stone sphinxes from Egypt, flanked by statues of Bavaria, Prussia and Brandenburg. The entire monument is illuminated magnificently at night, making for a serene and beautiful setting. On special occasions, such as Christmas, the monument is even lit up with colorful lights. There is a great view from the top of the monument of the surrounding city where visitors can often see the Alps in the Distance. The monument is easily accessible via public transportation and admission is free.
