📍 From Tower, Germany
The Französischer Dom is the domed tower adjoining the French Friedrichstadt Church on Berlin’s Gendarmenmarkt, where it forms a monumental ensemble with the Konzerthaus and Deutscher Dom. Despite its name, it is not a cathedral: “Dom” here refers to the dome. The church was built in the early 18th century for French Protestant Huguenots who had settled in Berlin after fleeing religious persecution. Added later that century, the tower provides an architectural counterpart to the Deutscher Dom across the square. Its columned portico, pale stonework and tall dome contribute to Gendarmenmarkt’s recognizable symmetry, while the viewing platform offers an elevated perspective over the square and surrounding rooftops. Inside, the Huguenot Museum connects this grand architectural setting to Berlin’s history of immigration and religious refuge.
