📍 France
Frac Sud – Cité de l’art contemporain is a contemporary art institution in Marseille’s Joliette district, close to the city’s former docks. It houses the regional contemporary art collection for Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, with a mission that extends beyond its galleries through exhibitions and loans across the region. Opened in 2013, its building was designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma. The façade’s white glass panels, set at varying angles, break the exterior into a shifting mosaic of light and shadow, giving the building a distinctive texture against the surrounding streets. This layered skin is its most recognizable photographic feature: an oblique view reveals the panels’ depth, while a frontal composition emphasizes their repeated grid.
