📍 United States
The Fox Theatre is a historic movie palace on Peachtree Street in Midtown Atlanta, opened in 1929 and now used for touring Broadway productions, concerts and other live performances. Originally conceived as a Shriners temple, it combines Moorish and Egyptian-inspired decoration, with ornate arches, domes and richly patterned interiors. The auditorium is designed to resemble an open-air Arabian courtyard: architectural façades frame the seating beneath a deep-blue ceiling with twinkling stars and drifting clouds. Its “Mighty Mo” pipe organ recalls the era when music accompanied silent films. Outside, the projecting Fox marquee anchors the building in the Peachtree streetscape; inside, the contrast between intricate ornament and the simulated night sky defines its visual character. A public campaign saved the theatre from demolition in the 1970s, making it an important chapter in Atlanta’s preservation history.
