Fortress Hohensalzburg crowns the Festungsberg above Salzburg’s Baroque old town, forming the city’s most distinctive skyline landmark. Founded in 1077 by Archbishop Gebhard during the Investiture Controversy, it was repeatedly enlarged by Salzburg’s prince-archbishops into a vast fortified residence and a symbol of their political and religious authority. Its pale ramparts, towers and steep roofs contrast with the domes and narrow streets below, while the terraces open across the Salzach River to the surrounding Alps. Inside, the ornate State Rooms reveal the ceremonial side of the fortress, especially the richly decorated Golden Hall and Golden Chamber. The elevated courtyards, heavy stonework and layered views offer strong compositions, and the site is reached from the historic center either on foot or by the Festungsbahn funicular.
