The Fortifications of Xi’an, known as Xi’an City Wall, are one of the largest and best-preserved ancient military defense systems in the world. Originally constructed during the Ming Dynasty in the late 14th century, the walls encircle the city in a massive rectangle, stretching 13.7 kilometers and standing 12 meters high. Look for the parapets arranged every 120 meters where archers once stationed to defend the city. Four grand gates punctuate the wall, with the South Gate being the most ornate and lively. Photo-travelers will appreciate the stunning views at sunrise or sunset, with vibrant red lanterns adorning the wall and providing a romantic evening glow. Biking along the top offers unique perspectives and ample opportunities for capturing panoramic shots of the city below.
