Fort St. Angelo is a renowned historic fort located in Valletta, Malta. It is a large bastioned fort that was built in the 15th century by the Knights of Malta and was the center of military operations during the Great Siege of Malta in 1565. Today it is open to the public and visitors can explore its ancient compared to modern features. The fort is composed of a large courtyard, or piazza, several barrack rooms, and dungeons. Inside the fort are exhibits detailing the fort’s long and varied history, as well as a maritime museum documenting Malta’s maritime history. Just across the way is the Upper Barrakka Gardens which offer stunning views of the stunning Grand Harbor of Valletta. The man-made gardens boast panoramas of the city skyline, as well as stunning views of several nearby fortifications. Built in the early 17th century, the Gardens also contain a serene fountain, ponds, grassy lawns, and colorful floral displays. At its center sits a Neo-classical memorial capturing the arrival of the Knights of St. John to Malta in 1530.
