It was built in 1902 to protect the Lynn Canal from possible foreign invasion. Fort Seward was transformed into a military base in 1941. The Fort, which consists of 23 buildings now, includes a cannery, officers quarters, historic weapons, seabees barracks, and a guardhouse. Visitors to the Fort Seward Historic Site will find a museum and interpretive gifts shop, history walks, and both self-guided and guided tours. There is no admission fee and the site is open all year round. The Fort extends out to the beach, making it a popular site for beachcombing and bird-watching. Visitors are also able to access the beach on the north side of the fort.
