Fort Saint-André is a commanding medieval fortress perched on the plateau of Villeneuve-lès-Avignon directly across the Rhône from Avignon. It was erected in the early 14th century by the French crown as a military and political stronghold to oversee and contain papal Avignon; that historical role explains its austere, defensive character and its importance in the contest between secular and ecclesiastical power in the region. Architecturally it presents massive curtain walls, square towers and a dominant rectangular donjon (keep), with a small Romanesque chapel—Saint-André—set within the outer bailey. The stonework, crenellations and arrow slits remain legible, offering a clear example of high-medieval fortification adapted to control river approaches. Unique to this site is the viewpoint: the ramparts afford an unmatched panoramic vista of Avignon’s skyline, the Rhône and the ruined Pont Saint-Bénézet; that visual dialogue between fortress and papal city is central to the site’s meaning.
