Fort George is an incredible 18th Century British fortification in eastern Scotland. Located in northern Highland Council area, the fort is a huge complex built by the German-born British Army officer, Lieutenant General George Wade. It features a number of unique buildings, from substantial barracks and store houses, to a chapel and prison. It’s also home to the Black Watch Museum and the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders Regimental Museum, both of which are definitely worth a visit. The fort also boasts well-maintained defensive walls and earthworks, and affords amazing views of the region’s natural beauty. It’s open year-round and is a popular tourist destination. Its grounds are often used for events ranging from military parades and wreath-laying ceremonies, to other activities. Visitors can choose from a variety of guided and self-guided tours. Whether you’re a history buff or simply looking for a unique outdoor excursion, Fort George offers something for everyone.
