Formentera is the low-lying Balearic island visible across the Mediterranean from the southern coast of Ibiza near Es Cubells. Together with Ibiza, it forms the Pityusic Islands, separated from Formentera by the channels and small islets of Es Freus. From this elevated coastal setting, the island often appears as a long, pale silhouette, with the higher plateau of La Mola defining its eastern end. The broad band of open water gives the scene its sense of scale, while clear weather sharpens the layered outlines of headlands, offshore islets, and distant shore.
