📍 From Inside, France
Fontenay Abbey-Forge is a magnificent French abbey, hidden away in the small town of Marmagne in western France. It was founded in 1132 by Gerard de Fontenay and his wife Beatrix of CLairesse, both of whom strongly adhered to the Rule of Saint Benedict. The Abbey-Forge was left almost untouched until recently, when an extensive renovation was completed to conserve and showcase the abbey's exquisite monuments, artworks and sculptures. Visitors to the abbey today can appreciate the intricate architecture of the church and its surrounding buildings, explore its cloister, and admire its unusual statues, which represent some of the finest examples of Gothic art. The abbey also includes its own forge, which has been protected and preserved to show early industrial techniques. With unique features like its Rotunda, its small doorways, and its courtyard adorned with terraced gardens, Fontenay Abbey-Forge is a place of both stunning beauty and invaluable cultural heritage.
