Fontana Maggiore is the historic fountain in Piazza Garibaldi, at the heart of Asolo’s old town, beside the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta. The Renaissance fountain is supplied by the Roman aqueduct known as La Bot, linking the town’s public square to a much older system of water engineering. Its crowning winged lion of Saint Mark recalls Asolo’s ties to the Venetian Republic. The stone basin and elevated lion form a distinctive foreground against the cathedral and surrounding historic façades, bringing water, civic symbolism and the architecture of the compact town center into a single scene.
