Fontana di Nettuno, located near the harbor in Messina, is one of the city’s iconic landmarks and a masterpiece by the Renaissance sculptor Giovanni Angelo Montorsoli. Commissioned in the mid-16th century, it was initially placed with Neptune’s gaze facing the city, symbolizing protection, but later turned to watch over the sea. The imposing figure of the sea god stands amidst sea creatures and mythological figures, celebrating Messina’s maritime heritage. Surrounded by a spacious square, the fountain offers a picturesque spot for memorable photos, while nearby cafés and shops invite visitors to soak in local culture just steps away.
