Fontana dell'Elefante, or the Elephant Fountain, is a Baroque fountain located in Catania's Piazza del Duomo. The fountain, built in Dresden from 1736 to 1744, was designed by Giovanni Battista Vaccarini, who brought it to Catania in 1745. Its center-piece is a giant elephant formed of lava rock and decorated with marble travertine and slate. Four dolphins, also made of stone, support the fountain and two large basins complete the sculpture. As Catania grew and developed, the Elefante became the symbol of the city's Baroque spirit. Every year the fountain is dressed up differently and illuminated, making it an unforgettable sight. Visiting the fountain is a must during a Catania trip and is one of the most iconic landmarks in the city.
