📍 From Piazza San Pietro, Vatican City
Fontana del Maderno and Piazza San Pietro are two large landmarks situated in Città del Vaticano, inside Vatican City.

The Fontana del Maderno was built by Carlo Maderno in 1613 and is known for its Renaissance-style decoration. The overall shape is a quadrangular fountain, with four ornamental columns supporting a bas-relief of Pope Paul V and an eagle, the symbol of the Borghese family. The fountain is a popular gathering place for photographers. Next to Fontana del Maderno lies Piazza San Pietro, the central square of Vatican City. It was built from 1656 to 1667 by Gian Lugi Bernini and represents a large musical oval with two stunning vertical façades, crafted from integrated sculptures and concentric circles. At the centre of the square lies a Crusader-era obelisk, given to Pope Sixtus V in 1586 by Domenico Fontana. This obelisk symbolizes Pietro's martyrdom, celebrated by its four surrounding fountains.
