For a hidden gem in the heart of Rome, the Fontana del Facchino (“Porter’s Fountain”) is one of the city’s lesser-known talking statues. Dating back to the late 16th century, it depicts a man carrying a barrel from which water once flowed, symbolizing a humble tribute to the city’s hardworking porters. Originally commissioned by the Università degli Acquaroli (Water-bearers’ Guild), it was placed on Via del Corso, then later moved to Via Lata. Shrouded in local lore and whimsical legends, the fountain’s battered surface testifies to centuries of passersby stopping for a sip or leaving satirical notes. Pause here to admire a piece of everyday Roman life, hidden amidst bustling streets.
