Fontana dei Fiumi
📍 Italy
Fontana dei Fiumi (Fountain of the Rivers) is a stunning fountain located in the Piazza Navona in Rome, Italy. It was built in 1651 as part of a series of fountains for Pope Innocent X. The fountain is an impressive sight, featuring stone figures draped in seashells pouring four streams of water from the four main rivers of the four continents known at the time: the Nile, Ganges, Danube and Rio de la Plata. The fountain is flanked by two statues of giants and topped by an obelisk. Surprisingly, the fountain was built without using any pumps. Instead, the water pressure of two nearby aqueducts is used to fill the fountain's tub. Fontana dei Fiumi is a popular attraction for visitors and residents of Rome, providing a beautiful and serene backdrop to the many cafes and restaurants in the Piazza Navona.
