Fontaine de Neptune
📍 France
The Fontaine de Neptune occupies a northern corner of Place Stanislas, Nancy’s monumental 18th-century square and part of its UNESCO-listed historic ensemble. Created by sculptor Barthélemy Guibal, the fountain merges a theatrical figure of Neptune with rockwork, flowing water and Jean Lamour’s exuberant gilded wrought-iron gates. The composition reflects the square’s refined Rococo character while softening the transition between its formal classical façades and surrounding streets. In photographs, pale stone, dark sculptural forms and flashes of gold create strong contrast, while the curved ironwork and cascading water provide a richly layered frame for the open square beyond.
