📍 From Town Streets, Iceland
Flatey is a small and secluded island located in Breiðafjörður Bay in western Iceland. Flatey is known for its alpine scenery, breathtaking views, and its variety of bird species. The island is characterized by its traditional nature and preserved buildings, stemming from its once-thriving population of fishermen and their families. Its lush green pastures, bright yellow fields and dabbled lupines are just some examples of the island's rich natural beauty. Hiking, fishing and boat tours can be arranged. Visitors can enjoy the view of Herring Factory, an abandoned fish processing station, or explore the rich local history, such as the centuries old turf houses, the nearly 100 year old ferry house, and the large Gothic style wooden church of the island. Other remarkable landmarks include Póstabúðir and “Sparifötur”, old shop and trading posts from early trading days in Iceland.
