Often called the flamingo lake, this broad estuary belongs to the Ría Celestún Biosphere Reserve on the western coast of Yucatán, beside the fishing town of Celestún. Its shallow, nutrient-rich waters and mangrove wetlands support large gatherings of American flamingos, whose coral-pink plumage contrasts with the muted blue water and green shoreline. Boat trips reveal shifting formations, mirrored birds in calm water, and flocks lifting above the estuary; sightings and group sizes vary with season and water conditions. Visitors should use authorized boat services and keep a respectful distance from feeding and resting birds.
