Fiume Mera is the Alpine river running through Chiavenna, linking the town to Val Bregaglia upstream and Lake Mezzola downstream. Its swift, blue-green water and exposed pale boulders contrast with stone embankments, bridges, tiled roofs, and the close mountain slopes surrounding the valley floor. From the crossings near the historic center, the river creates layered views of old façades and peaks, while changes in water level reveal different textures in the rocky channel. Known as the Maira across the Swiss border, it also reflects Chiavenna’s long-standing position on a route between the Italian lakes and the central Alps.
