📍 United States
The First Baptist Church in America stands at the foot of College Hill in Providence, Rhode Island, close to the Providence River. Its congregation, founded by Roger Williams in 1638, is the oldest Baptist congregation in the United States and reflects the city’s early commitment to religious liberty. Completed in 1775, the present meetinghouse combines Georgian proportions, white clapboard walls, and a slender steeple that punctuates the historic hillside. The symmetrical façade and orderly windows emphasize the building’s broad form beneath the soaring tower, making it recognizable in views along North Main Street. Its longstanding connection with nearby Brown University includes hosting commencement ceremonies.
