Festung Hohensalzburg crowns the Festungsberg above Salzburg’s baroque Old Town, forming the city’s most dominant landmark. Founded in 1077 by Archbishop Gebhard and repeatedly enlarged by Salzburg’s prince-archbishops, the fortress reflects their combined religious, political, and military authority. Its pale walls, bastions, courtyards, and clustered towers create a striking contrast with the copper-green domes below and the Alpine horizon beyond. From the ramparts, views extend across the Salzach River, the historic center, and surrounding mountains, while viewpoints in the city frame the fortress high above narrow streets and church spires. The hilltop complex can be reached on foot or by the Festungsbahn funicular from the Old Town.
