Ferrara Cathedral is a marvellous example of Romanesque architecture located in the historic city of Ferrara, Italy. This Cathedral dates back to the 12th century, when it was constructed by Marquis Obizzo II. Although it was initially built in the Romanesque style, later additions in the 16th and 17th centuries created a unique Baroque facade. Inside, the Cathedral features an awe-inspiring nave with gorgeous wall frescoes and lofty Gothic arches. It is also the home of the celebrated Renaissance painting, the “Lamentation Over the Dead Christ” by Giovanni Maria Viani. This painting is a must-see for any art lover visiting Ferrara Cathedral. In front of the Cathedral stands an impressive bell tower that is more than 60 meters tall. Visitors to this magnificent Cathedral also have the chance to see several chapels, each with its own beautiful décor and artworks by some of the great Renaissance painters, as well as a crypt where the remains of some of the Estense Passarini family are buried. This is definitely a must-see destination when visiting Ferrara!
