Feltre, in Veneto’s province of Belluno, stands where the southern Dolomite foothills meet the Piave valley. Its walled historic center occupies a hill above the lower town, with narrow streets climbing toward Piazza Maggiore. The Renaissance character of its palaces reflects rebuilding after the city’s destruction in 1510, during the wars involving Venice. Frescoed façades, stone gateways and arcaded buildings preserve the visual imprint of Venetian rule. Piazza Maggiore opens up the otherwise compact streetscape, with the Torre dell’Orologio rising above its upper edge. Painted plaster, weathered stone and layered tiled roofs give the old town a distinctive texture, while the surrounding mountains place its architecture firmly in an Alpine setting.
