Fátyol-vízesés lies in the forested Szalajka Valley above Szilvásvárad, on the western edge of Hungary’s Bükk Mountains. The Szalajka Stream descends here across a staircase of pale limestone tufa terraces, breaking into fine, veil-like ribbons that give the waterfall its name. Mossy ledges, clear water and dense beech woodland create its recognizable layered composition, while the flow and surrounding colors change markedly with rainfall and season. The falls are reached along the valley’s walking route; the Szalajka Valley Forest Railway also stops nearby, making this natural landmark one of the valley’s central sights.
