Faro di Capo Zafferano
📍 Italy
Faro di Capo Zafferano is the active lighthouse that crowns the rocky promontory at the entrance to the Gulf of Palermo near Santa Flavia. It serves as a practical navigational mark for vessels approaching Palermo and the smaller harbors along the northern Sicilian coast, and is prized by visitors for its dramatic siting atop Mediterranean cliffs and the sweeping views over the Tyrrhenian Sea.

The installation dates to the broader program of coastal beacons established in the modern era and today is managed by the Italian Navy (Marina Militare); it functions automatically but retains the compact ensemble of tower and keeper’s house typical of classical lighthouses. Architecturally the site pairs a tapered masonry tower—traditionally painted to enhance daytime visibility—with attached service buildings that reflect utilitarian 19th/20th‑century lighthouse design. What distinguishes Capo Zafferano for visitors is its coastal setting: accessible viewpoints on the cape look over rocky coves, small fishing settlements (notably nearby Porticello), and walking routes along the shore. The cape also forms part of the local visual identity, often featured in photos at sunrise and sunset, and is adjacent to stretches of rugged coastline where remnants of older coastal defenses and watchpoints can still be seen, linking the site to Sicily’s layered maritime history.
