Fargegata, Stavanger’s “color street,” is the brightly painted stretch of Øvre Holmegate in the city center, near Vågen harbor; it is distinct from nearby Nedre Holmegate. Its wooden buildings received a coordinated color scheme in 2005 through a locally driven effort to revitalize the street. Saturated pinks, blues, greens, and yellows turn traditional timber façades into a striking streetscape, while contrasting window frames and doorways emphasize each building’s character. Views along the narrow street bring these colors together in overlapping layers of roofs, shopfronts, and signs. Cafés, bars, and outdoor tables add everyday social life to the scene, making the street more than an architectural color study.
