Falls Bridge
📍 United States
Falls Bridge (formerly known as Centre Bridge) is a historic bridge crossing the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Built in 1817, it is one of the oldest bridges still in use in the United States and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is an excellent example of an early stone arch bridge that is constructed from local native materials of shale and limestone. The bridge spans 340 feet (104 m) and rises 66 feet (20 m) above the river. Its seven arches, each semi-circular and having a 6-foot (1.8 m) radius, are built of ashlar masonry. The balustrade walls are of stone and have a pleasing cornice line and die sections with foliage. The bridge, which is open to vehicular traffic, is an ideal place to take in a panorama of the city skyline and gardens, as well as the riverfront pathways and boat launches.
