Falaise d’Aval rises at the western end of Étretat’s pebble beach on Normandy’s Alabaster Coast. Its chalk sea arch, the Porte d’Aval, stands beside the freestanding pinnacle known as L’Aiguille, forming the silhouette most closely associated with the town. Dark flint bands run through the pale cliff, while the changing tide alters how much of its base is visible. Claude Monet painted this stretch of coast repeatedly, drawn to the changing light on its white rock and the sea.
