Externsteine
📍 From Teutoburg Forest, Germany
Externsteine and Teutoburg Forest are a pair of natural sites located near Horn-Bad Meinberg in Germany. Externsteine is a group of five terminal rocks of sandstone, roughly 30 meters high, situated in a valley near the Forest. These six-millennia-old rocks have fascinated historians, archaeologists and geologists across generations and served as a backdrop of many myths and legends. Teutoburg Forest, on the other hand, is the site where a coalition of Germanic tribes ambushed and defeated three Roman legions under the command of Quintilius Varus in 9 AD. This region has been associated with legendary German figures such as Arminius and Hermann and has played an important role in the formation of a German national identity. Both Externsteine and Teutoburg Forest offer scenic views and walking trails, and serve as a great spot for hikers and nature lovers.
