EX Eglise Saint Louis
📍 From Rue Leon Roches - Bab El Oued, Algeria
The EX Eglise Saint Louis in Bab El Oued is a relic of French colonial rule in Algeria. Built in the 1910s, the church served as a spiritual center for the French colonials. After Algeria gained independence in 1962, the dual-towered building became an opera house. However, after a series of renovations, the building was abandoned and now stands as a stark reminder of the similarities and differences between French Algeria and modern-day Algeria. The interior is decorated with a blend of traditional Arab and colonial French influence. The bell tower still has two bells, and is lit up at night with blue and white lights. The neighborhood of Bab El Oued is a great spot to explore further, with plenty of cafes and stores to discover.
