Ettal Abbey, founded in 1330, is a Benedictine monastery situated in the Bavarian village of Ettal and is now an important part of the Oberammergau region’s cultural heritage. This Abbey is an incredible mix of Baroque and Rococo elements, including the richly decorated rococo interior of the impressive Pilgrimage Church. Stretching out from the abbey to the north, is a huge landscape park including a German flower garden laid out in the classical style. Visitors should not miss the Abbey Museum, which is home to some exquisite works of gold embroidery, historic objects, and many other artifacts from the monastery’s history. At the heart of the abbey grounds is its archaeological site, revealing the history of the abbey since the 14th century. For those interested in history, there are audio guided tours (in German) available to explore the museum.
