Estación de esquí Sierra Nevada is Spain’s premier high-mountain ski resort, perched on the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada range above Monachil. It’s notable for being one of Europe’s highest ski areas — base around 2,100 m and lifts reaching roughly 3,300 m toward Pico Veleta — which gives a long, reliable season and spectacular panoramas that can include the Mediterranean and, on clear days, the African coast. The resort offers about 110 km of marked pistes spanning varied difficulty (beginner areas in Borreguiles, extensive intermediate runs, and steep advanced terrain toward Veleta and Loma de Dílar), supported by a modern lift network and extensive snowmaking.
Historically, the resort’s development in the 20th century transformed these high peaks into a major winter-sports hub; it achieved international prominence when it hosted the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in 1996. Unique features include the high-altitude training facilities and the stadium area used for competitions and events. Proximity to Granada and the Alhambra makes Sierra Nevada an unusual combination of cultural sightseeing and mountain sports within a short distance.
