The Església de Sant Martí d'Empúries is the parish church at the heart of Sant Martí d'Empúries, a small coastal village in the municipality of l'Escala, on Catalonia's Costa Brava. The present building dates from the 16th century and follows the late Gothic tradition, with a carved entrance and a rose window set into its broad stone façade. Facing the village square, the church forms a distinctive backdrop to the closely grouped stone houses, with weathered masonry and carved details giving the scene its texture. The setting has a much older history: Sant Martí occupies the site of the Palaiapolis, the original Greek settlement of Empúries, while the extensive Greek and Roman archaeological remains lie nearby.
