Escalera de la Paz, or “Stairway of Peace,” is a pedestrian staircase in Concepción, the capital of Chile’s Biobío Region. The city’s landscape combines a largely level urban center with wooded hills, giving stairways a role in its pedestrian geography. Viewed from below, the repeated horizontal edges of the steps emphasize the ascent, turning a change in elevation into the defining feature of the scene.
