Erg Chebbi is a broad field of wind-sculpted Saharan dunes rising beside Hassilabied, near Merzouga in southeastern Morocco. Its rolling ridges contrast sharply with the surrounding stony plains and the low village buildings along the desert’s western edge. The dunes shift from pale gold to deep orange as the sun changes angle, while early and late light creates long shadows that reveal ripples, slip faces, and layered contours. Camel trains, scattered tamarisk shrubs, and footprints provide a sense of scale within an otherwise abstract landscape; from higher ridges, repeating curves extend toward the horizon. The area is closely associated with the Amazigh communities of the Tafilalt region and with desert travel traditions now central to local tourism.
