Erfurt, the capital of Thuringia, is centered on one of Germany’s best-preserved medieval old towns. On Domplatz, Erfurt Cathedral and the Church of St Severus rise together above a broad flight of steps, forming the city’s most recognizable silhouette. Erfurt grew wealthy as a medieval trading center, notably through the woad dye trade, while Martin Luther studied at its university and later lived as a monk in the Augustinian Monastery.
