Erfurt, the capital of Thuringia, lies in the broad Thuringian Basin and retains a compact historic center shaped by medieval trade. Its most recognizable landmark is the Krämerbrücke, a stone bridge lined on both sides with inhabited half-timbered houses and shops, spanning a branch of the Gera River. At Domplatz, the Gothic Erfurt Cathedral and Severikirche rise together above a monumental staircase, creating the city’s defining skyline. Narrow lanes, restored merchant houses and waterside façades add layers of color and texture, while the Petersberg Citadel offers an elevated view over red roofs and church towers. Erfurt is also closely connected with Martin Luther, who studied here and later lived as a monk in the Augustinian monastery.
