The present neo-Gothic Rathaus was built in the late 19th century, its pointed arches, tracery, steep roofs and warm stone façade expressing the city’s civic confidence. Inside, murals by Eduard Kaempffer depict episodes from Erfurt’s history and German legends, linking the building to the wider cultural memory of Thuringia. From the square, the strongest composition sets the symmetrical façade against the Fischmarkt’s colorful historic frontages; oblique views emphasize the contrast between neo-Gothic civic architecture and the narrower patrician houses nearby.
